Multidisciplinary Dialogue for Biodiversity – Biodiful Leadership Forum 2025

Read time

Biodiful Leadership Forum is an annual event that brings together experts, decision-makers, and those interested in biodiversity to discuss sustainable leadership and biodiversity. The forum offers a unique opportunity to explore the latest research, share experiences across sectors, and jointly build a path toward a future that respects biodiversity. This year’s 2025 forum will take place on May 22 at Logomo in Turku, under the theme “Biodiversity: Science and Business.” The event provides an overview of the latest research on biodiversity and its connection to business.

Where did it all begin?

The first forum was held in 2023, with the theme focusing on the importance of biodiversity in leadership. Professor Ilari E. Sääksjärvi opened the event with his keynote “The Fragile Web of Life,” emphasizing the crucial role of biodiversity in the well-being of our planet. Other speakers included Member of the European Parliament Ville Niinistö, who shed light on the development of the EU’s biodiversity policy, and Saara Kankaanrinta, who introduced a regenerative food system from Qvidja Farm. Professor Satu Teerikangas challenged traditional concepts of leadership by presenting what biodiversity-respecting leadership could look like. Workshops covered topics such as measuring biodiversity, supply chain management, nature-positive business models, and transforming food systems. Professor Ilari Sääksjärvi described in his speech how life forms on Earth are intricately interconnected, forming a delicate and diverse whole—the web of life.

The 2024 Forum – Futures and Hope

The second forum was held in Helsinki under the theme “Futures, Biodiversity and Business.” The event focused on how biodiversity can be integrated into leadership to build a sustainable future. Throughout the day, presentations addressed topics such as futures consciousness (Sanna Ahvenharju), leading the sustainability transition (Sari Puustinen and Outi Uusitalo), the transition to a diversity-based economy (Matti Salo and Irene Kuhmonen), and the role of businesses and indicators in supporting biodiversity (Ville Uusitalo and Tiina Onkila).

A panel discussion explored the question of what kinds of futures we want—and who is responsible for driving the change. The event concluded with Professor Satu Teerikangas’s summary and reflections on the day’s key insights.
