Abstract
This study explores Generation Z’s path to flourishing, focusing on hedonic and eudaimonic wellness pursuits and their underlying motivations influencing Gen Z’s overall well-being in California and Finland. While a variety of wellness pursuits and motivations were identified, findings revealed a strong inclination towards eudaimonic well-being. Furthermore, the study identified seven overarching themes across both countries, highlighting commonalities in Gen Zs’ pursuit of flourishing:
- Appreciating and Engaging with Nature and Slowing Down
- Engaging in Mindful and Meaningful Activities and Experiences
- Cherishing Genuine Relationships
- Striving for Meaningfulness and Virtuous Living
- Finding Accomplishment in Small Achievements and Routines
- Adopting a Holistic Approach to Well-Being
- Maintaining Autonomy and Personal Values
These findings highlight that Gen Zs are increasingly prioritizing meaningful and non-materialistic wellness pursuits over materialistic and pleasure-seeking ones. This shift reflects not only individual preferences but also a broader societal transformation towards sustainability and ethical considerations in lifestyle choices. The implications of this transformation are profound, indicating a move from consumerism towards redefining the ‘good life’.
The key themes identified in this study reflect the shared values of Gen Zs, including universalism, benevolence, self-direction, and achievement. While Gen Z’s values suggest a commitment to sustainability, this does not always translate into actual behaviors. However, this study affirms that these values do manifest in Gen Zs’ wellness behaviors across both countries. This insight is valuable for leisure researchers and practitioners, suggesting that leisure offerings should align with Gen Z’s values and focus on mindful and meaningful experiences that promote sustainability and well-being.
This study highlights the transformative potential of leisure beyond Gen Z, emphasizing its role in fostering sustainable practices and a sense of responsibility towards the natural world. Additionally, it paves the way for reimagining leisure activities and experiences to align with the principles of sustainable and ethical living. Ultimately, the study contributes to a broader discussion on leisure and a good life, elucidating what it means to flourish within the constraints of planetary boundaries and offering a pathway for understanding the essential role that leisure can play in promoting a sustainable future.
